Painting melamine kitchen cabinets

B. Enne on Aug 13, 2015Click on blue dots to see full answer. I am no expert but have painted melamine, thermofoil and wood cabinets successfully at least 5 times, on a budget. 1-Clean cupboards with liquid sandpaper (generic is fine) and steel wool (not S.O.S pads...check the hardware section at Dollarama). A small bottle is fine because a little goes a long way. It removes grease, dirt, wax and dulls the finish WITHOUT sanding. I like it better than TSP. 2-Wipe residue off with a damp cloth. 3-Prime with a good high-adhesion primer (important since you probably won't find any oil paint). 4- Cover with a good eggshell or semi-gloss acrylic or latex paint. If you can still find oil-based melamine paint, buy it. The last primer I bought was Valspar from Lowes or Walmart--it had good rating online and was cheaper...just make sure it is a good high-adhesion or stain covering one. It is like carpeting...you are better off with a quality underpad then a high-end carpet and cheap under pad. I have had luck with the better Home Hardware paints (I asked for a melamine-type finish). I like to use foam paint brushes and High-Density foam roller for a smooth finish. You can get those at Dollarama too...but sometimes they are cheaper in bulk at a Princess Auto or big box stores. Good luck!1 marked as helpful Reply

Heather on Aug 13, 2015I painted our melamine cabinets last year, here's what I did: 1) Clean with T.S.P 2) Prime with a primer sealer such as Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 or Zinsser B.I.N 3) Heavy Duty Furniture & Cabinet Paint - This is the one I used http://www.kent.ca/kbs/en/product.jsp?skuId=6456208&navAction=jump&navId=2056&prdId=6456208&catalogId=2056 Make sure you use a small foam roller for best results on the flat surface - http://www.kent.ca/kbs/en/product.jsp?navAction=jump&navId=2038&prdId=6610309&skuId=6610309&catalogId=2038 Have fun!Helpful Reply
