  • I assume your asking about the chalkboard paint? This is a popular paint for kids rooms and even a small area in a kitchen. It is an OK method of painting a wall so kids can use chalk on it, but it does not clean up quite as easy as a real chalk board would. Depending on the age of the children who are going to use this wall or spot, you may be better served by purchasing a hang on wall type that can be removed when the child outgrows it. In any case, this goes on just like normal paint. A few coats are required to get the surface just right for using chalk on it. And you need to wait a few days, before you let the kids have at it.
  • Or, do you have a question about AS chalk paint?
  • I heard they are awesome, but some pros have said go the usual route since the chalk paint in expensive. What have you decided?

Actually I hit send before finishing my note! I was going to ask if anyone had tried a DYI recipe for chalk paint (i.e. Annie Sloan.) I found one using plaster of paris and latex paint (2/3 PO Paris to 1/3 paint as a "suggested" ratio.) I am not interesting in making Chalk Board paint! I am just having a very hard time spending $35 on a quart of Annie Sloan paint even though ALL the reviews for this product are excellent.

I have found that I am very willing to spend that extra $$ on something that I just love and have found works well!! We're living in our "forever home" and at out first place we would just buy the cheapest paint at the store and not even worry about the finish or anything-we're young-ok:) But since we've moved its nothing but Grand Distinctions semi gloss for us-all the way:) Sure it's like $35/gallon but there is nothing I've found that works better PLUS its a paint and primer all in one:) point being, some things are just worth that extra "change":)
  • AS chalk paint offers a very specific look. It is very good for old world or rustic country styles where a worn or "crusty" finish is the desired outcome. I would recommend taking a class that will show you the best way to manipulate the product to get the results that you want. I do not use it because I already have so many products on my shelves that will achieve the same results. (But, my shelves are OVERLOADED with different products!!!!) My only concern is that, on its own, it is not very durable. But, that is why it is so easy to sand and achieve those effects. The top coat that they recommend is wax. Yes, it is durable. But, if you ever want to make a change, be prepared for a LOT of work. Wax is one of the most difficult surfaces to paint over.
  • One of the selling features of the AS chalk paint is that you SUPPOSEDLY do not need to prime the surface. I don't trust that claim. But, I know that the recipe that you posted will definitely NOT do that.

I have put the first coat of the DYI mixture directly over a NON-PRIMED pine bookcase and it could not have worked any better! I will post a picture when the project is finished. With AS you are able to distress the piece within about 2 hours after the final coat of paint versus waiting 48 hours with the DVI recipe. So far - so good!

Dear WallsTreatStudio...believe me, you can trust the claim of no prep. I have painted many types of surfaces..metal, wood, ceramic, resin and never primed or sanded. A ASCP piece that has been waxed Can be painted over. You are incorrect in stating it is a lot of work to change a piece. I have painted a piece...it did not sell, so I repainted it in a new color...no problem! A 'Crusty' look is only one of the techniques you can achieve with this paint...it is not a craft paint, but a true highly pigmented artists paint. Most times the finish is silky smooth.

Janet, I agree with you 100%. I have used ASCP on many types of surfaces and have had no problems. I painted it directly over a piece that was made in Indonesia and had a wax finish. The surfaces of the piece are getting alot of use because it is in my store and items are constantly being moved on and off of it. So far there are absolutely no areas of chipping.
