Ideas on how to convert a regular closet door into a "barn door" ?

We need every inch of space in our small bedrooms and would like to convert the bedroom door and the closet door of the master and the closet door of the spare bedroom into barn door style doors . But buying a pre made barn door is pricey and we would like to reuse the doors themselves but aren't quite sure if they need to be slightly wider than they are now and how to go about converting them for the task . the fixtures has been found at a reasonable price on amazon already . we haven't yet got the keys to the place ( waiting for closing ) yet so i don't have photos sorry

This ought to help you with everything you asked about. Including making your current doors larger. I will add that though these type of don't swing, you do lose wall space. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/build/doors-windows/diy-barn-door-style-doors-with-a-twist-6431596

@Tina, I missed your earlier comment as we were replying at the same time. I'm glad it looks like it will work out for you. And no worries. I'm very good at waiting. We were the contractors of our home and just short of twelve years after moving in, we're still not finished with all the trim and doors.

i just did this on my bedroom/bathroom door and you will love it; I just added a milled 2 x to the bottom of a standard door (4" wider than the old opening) to make it long enough that i could do as I painted a faux white on grey wood grain on the door. It is not as easy as it looks; but well worth the effort!
