I use all sorts of bins and boxes and silverware trays in a dresser drawer.
A plastic roll about storage, with drawers. I keep it in a closet. Each drawer a category. Every necklace in a small zip lock bag. Colors grouped into larger bags. Pins in a drawer in the storage unit, with a candy box, used as dividers.

I have a nice real jewelry box with drawers and ring holder etc. This from my discount store. I have some plastic fishing boxes from the guy section of my discount store. . . these are great for keeping earrings separate and also chain type necklaces. + they cost very little and can fit in a variety of places.
Oh, forgot in this picture is a narrow but long board with angle hooks in it that hold a lot of beaded necklaces! Also I hang them on my little angel sculpture.
