Ive had a free standing headboard for years. Its up against wall held in position by weight of bed, this works well occasionally it would move forward /tilted,I kept it simple I used 2 way foam tape,I used a few drops of silkcone to keep a table top addition in place ,both worked v well and easy as there is no strictural damage.

Depends on the style of headboard you are making...will it be attached to the bed frame? I made one from mdf trimmed around the edges like a picture frame using fancy trim. My husband was able to hide the screws right in the trim to anchor into the studs and/drywall plugs. This wouldn't work for a plainer or upholstered headboard, you would have to install d-rings or a heavier fastener into the frame of the headboard and hang it from the screws that were anchored into the studs and/or drywall plugs.
