How to install a door at the top of our stairs?

This is the top of the stairs where I want to add a door. The problem is no wall for a door frame, any ideas out there for DIY??! Thanks!

Just a quick note..... A door at the top of stairs must swing toward the upper level and not out over the staircase. Code and safety requirements
What about a barn door?
I have a staircase with a metal railing on both sides, how do I make it safe so the baby can’t fall down. What kind of gate do you suggest?

I'm a bit confused because the photos show a wall on either side of the top of the stairs. You can build a door frame and install the door to open toward the room. Another option is to add a door at the bottom of the stairs which might be easier.
