You can buy a small plastic cutting guide. It has a straight cut and mitre angles at 45 degrees.
Using a square, mark your line to cut and follow the line.
For long cuts, measure at each end and pop a chalk line to cut by with your saw.

My husband uses a pencil or chalk line to get a straight line marked, then saws the wood by eye. He does a great job. He has never owned a table saw.
