Years ago my sister made her kitchen island . She bought 3 discontinued cabinet for next to nothing . She placed 2 of them back to back and the other one she placed like an end cap , opposite side she put a piece of wood and stained it the same color as the cabinets . Then she ordered a synthetic stone top , leaving an over hang on 2 sides for seating . And she had plenty of extra cabinet space !

Luann....You can also use a low chest and turn it into an island. You may need to cover the back as many times it is not finished. You also may need to to add a base or legs at bottom to give it a little height. Hope this helps and good luck!

Look around your house for something that is a good height for a kitchen island. Go to IKEA and buy a top for it for around $25.00 I used an old dresser and bought a black 5 foot long x 30 inch wide top for $25.00. I attached it to the dresser with inexpensive black wrought iron shelf brackets. I have been enjoying it for over a year now. They have tops in a few colors, smaller and larger than the one I purchased. They clean with a wet cloth. Use protection for hot items. I use a cutting board.
