I love using pallet wood for projects, you can get pallets for free from many businesses. I always use heat treated pallets just to be safe, they will have the "HT" symbol on them. Here are some links for building trellises with pallets:

I was going to suggest that too, but also long pieces of furring strips (1x2's) that are stained or painted to withstand the elements. That way you could make it in any shape or size you want.

Years ago, we had a huge concord grape vine and we made a three sided trellis using 2x4's and 4x4's. We used chicken wire for the top, two sides and the back, but you could use whatever you want. We just happened to have a bunch hanging around. We used eight foot 4x4's for the main uprights, 2x4's for horizontal supports on all three sides and the top, we also did one or two upright supports on the back since it was eight foot wide and only the 4x4's on the corners. The grape plant covered the back pretty well the first year, so we planted viney plants like gourds on the sides until it filled in on the sides. We built a bench with 2x4's, very basic to put inside so we could sit out there if we wanted. I hope this gives you an idea, Karen, as to what you may want for your trellis.

My grandparents built like a smaller pergola to drape their vines over. It wasn’t as big as a regular sized pergola but much smaller and you could walk under it. if I remember correctly they used like staked pieces of wood. I’m sure it will look great. You can get really creative with it.

Wire panels also may work secured to post, you can also bend them in an arch if you like.

  • i would think lattice would work connect with two by two's and bury two by two's in ground so far to stabilize

This is our grape arbor built by my husband. The posts go pretty deep into the ground because we live in Maine and frost line is 4' deep. Cost for materials under $200

Wow,I love that. Mine was just put in the ground last year, but she's at least 7 years old. We had 3 little bitty grape bunches this year. It's a purple, large grapes, like global large. I forgot her name. Anyway,i knew they got big,but your vine is massive. Beautiful. Do you cut it back every year or just leave it as is? Some one told me to cut it back every fall.
