Placing your footing is the most important part. Typically anything over 3' requires a permit, so keep that in mind.
I have used Windsor blocks. They have a little lip on the bottom of the back so they "interlock with the previous row. Very easy to use. Good luck.
If it is going to do some major holding of material behind it, you might want to consider a pro as they can best calculate the appropriate engineering so it won’t fail.
