Burlap Washing?
Looking to make a Christmas tree skirt using burlap. I have read that washing the burlap is recommended. Really? Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Washing will remove some of the stiffness and the odor.

Hi Denise, Here are a few burlap tree skirt tutorials and none of them mention washing it first. I hope they help.

Washing first will work well if you want a softer feel, just know to wash it alone and your washer will likely be left with a lot of lloose fibers!
I have never washed burlap before using in projects - it easily frays and gets wrinkled so I would use it as it.

I would think you would want to put something on the raw edges before you wash it to prevent fraying.
I've read that you should wash it by hand because the natural jute fibers will deteriorate in a washing machine.
I would hand wash as it ravels easily . Make sure to seal edges. I use fray check.
Hello. I have never washed burlap in my projects I have constructed. I feel it will cause it to change its structure and weaken the fibers. If thats your desirable feature Would consider handwashing only
Hi Denise, you'll need to hem all the way around your tree skirt before washing to prevent it from fraying. If you do want to wash it, hand washing in cold water is preferable to prevent shrinkage.
I’ve personally never washed burlap but knowing how easily it unravels by just looking at it, you might quick stitch or finish the edges before doing so so you don’t end up with a ball of string.
I have never heard of this and I have a burlap tree skirt I made several years ago. To clean mine, I just use a lint roller.
Draw and cut out a circle of Burlap. Cut to centre. Make hole big enough for tree. Edge it with Bias Binding or other to keep looking good.
Wash by hand let dry flat first
You can wash by hand and let air dry
My guess would be that washing burlap would take the stiffness out of the burlap and surely make it softer if that is what you want. For all my burlap projects I have never been advised to wash the burlap.
Hi Denise, this is a great instructional for washing burlap, hope it helps you out,
