Hi Pat, I would look for a specific acid based stone/masonry cleaner. After that you might consider sealing it with a masonry sealant to help it stay cleaner in the future and make it easier to clean :)
I mop my stone tile with 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup baking soda, 1 tbsp blue dawn, 2 gallons hot water.
I usually just use my steamer and go over it. If you have grout, just be careful. If it's chipped or loose I would avoid using the steam on those areas.
In a small bucket, dilute a quarter-cup of dish soap in a quart of hot but not scalding water. (The emulsifying agents in soap are all you need to clean a fireplace that’s not heavily coated with soot). Stir until the soap has dissolved. Scrub with a brush. Rinse well with rag and clean warm water.

I use white vinegar, dawn and water on my stone entry floor. I also bought a stone sealer at Home Depot to keep it nice for months at a time.
Do you have a picture? Have you tried getting a stiff brush and just scrubbing it with soap and water?
