How to prevent litter smells?

I’m not sure I made myself clear. I have a litter system that is actually two pans with a sifter. I scoop the litter constantly, but I will sift it if it looks like it needs it...maybe every couple of days. I’ll rinse the one box and let it dry and so on. I continue to add new litter as it goes down. But in AT LEAST every two weeks I dump all the litter in the trash and wash the litter boxes and sifter and then refill with completely new litter. I have a tidy cat bucket with a trash can liner that I put the dirty litter in, except poo, and sawdust that I put on top of the dirty litter, which also has a cover. The dirty litter gets thrown out on garbage day. Once a week. I’m thinking that I should use a metal can, lined and with a lid, that would get thrown out EVERY day.

Honestly, I’m getting tired of this. We had just one cat, but then when my daughter married, we had to take her husband’s cat because of her dog. We have 5 feral cats outside. The first one that came was literally skin and bones. We couldn’t not feed it. He was picked up in the catch and release program and came back. He was the only one for a couple of years, but eventually the others showed up. We didn’t want that one in the house and fed him outside. So now not only do we have all these cats out there, but now we have up to eight ducks at a time looking for food and water. I keep calling the city and they do nothing.

I have a huge amount of difficulties in my life. One son died at 39, his twin has a brain tumor, and my oldest, at 47 just had a quintuple bypass. I take care of my severely autistic , 18-year-old, grandson. Thank God for his support along with an amazing congregation’s love and support.

Ok that sounds much better. With multiple cats it gets trickier. I have 6 but mine are indoor / outdoor cats which does help some. Most municipalities do nothing, they have bigger things to worry about. Your best bet is to Google for independent rescue groups in your area. In the meantime I would scoop up and dispose of any waste immediately and not leave in a waste bin in the room.

So sorry about your loss, no parent should have to have a child pass before them. You certainly have your hands full and don't forget to take care of yourself too. Keep the faith, stay positive and move forward as best you can.

Thank you for your kind words. I found a tin can and have started using it for the clumps of pee. Prior to this, I was using a tidy cat bucket for it. But I’ve always used sawdust to cover each scoop. Anyway, the tin can is working very well. I also added another litter box, making three altogether, I still have to empty the used litter every day, but I don’t smell anything now.

On another sad note, I have another child whose terminal with a brain tumor. I had 5 children and the four left, except for one, all have extreme illnesses. I raised 5 healthy kids. I baked homemade bread from scratch and used natural methods to keep them that way. Unfortunately, after hitting their late 30’s and early forties, things have gone downhill. My oldest had a quintuple bypass four months ago and this week had to have two stents put in.

My mother’s side of the family live into their 90’s, but on my father’s side, forties and 50’s with heart disease.

The one child who’s well is from a different father.

So I hope this isn’t too much information
