Time to get new flatware!
I would do a little test by rubbing a couple of pieces with vegetable oil. Cover each piece completely and then wash by hand using your liquid soap.
You might contact Bartender's Friend and see what they have to say.
That should not have ruined the finish. Try re-wiping them down with plain white toothpaste . If that does not work the finish must have already come off.
Maybe the Stainless steel was not of a good quality, They are not all the same...........
I was going to post some of the same things that Big lulu posted. However my first thought was to call the manufacturer. With any luck, they'll have a customer service representative who you can advise you. Here is the link to their Contact page. You can either email them with your problem or call them. The phone number is down lower so to see it, you'll have to keep scrolling.

If it hasn't ruined the finish, rubbing with vegetable oil, might take off the excess Barkeepers Friend and make it shine again. If not, you might have to get new flatware. :( BTW, I hope we're talking about the same product. I can't find a Bartenders Friend and when I search for it, Barkeepers Friend come's up.
Hope that helps.
Thanks all. It was BarKEEPERS Friend which is one of my favorites. The finish is completely off so there is a warning about not letting this stuff stay on too long without buffing. It is no loss, really. some of the pieces were good name brand quality and some were not. All of it came from thrift stores.
