If its not too bad, I would wash with 1/2-1c of 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax and put 1/2c of white vinegar in the rinse.

Try a vinegar and water soak (50/50) for a morning and then launder as usual. The idea is to kill the mildew with something that easily washes out. I would hang the fabric in the sun to finish the job.

I had some clothes that were stored in boxes that were really musty smelling and I washed them in my Tide Sport and it worked! Just check them before you put them in the dryer, I did have a couple of things that needed a second wash. You could also put some vinegar in your softener spot to give it a little boost.

Be sure to use white vinegar. Pour a cup full in your wash as well as in the rinse cycle. The vinegar smell goes away after drying, so does the mildew. This also works for urine and other smells. If there are black stains you might have to trash.

Run them through the washer again. Did you leave them in the tub for a while and it soured? Also , you might want to wash out your tub by running an empty load with cleaner and a little bleach.

Wash well with hot water with at least a cup of vinegar added. Let it soak before agitating. Then let it dry in the sun.
