Person trying to save money on water bill didn't flush every time. So there's a grey stain at the water line. I've tried bleach, which lightened slightly, but it didn't remove it. Any other ideas?

Try a pumie stone (Pumice)...you can get them at the hardware store. Keep the stone wet as you use it on the stain...should work.

The best cleaning solution I've ever used and cleans my toilet good, its baking soda, peroxide, and vinegar. After the vinegar and baking soda stops fizzing I add the peroxide. I never measure exactly just add together until it has the consistency of paint. Pour it in and let set overnight clean with bowl brush in the morning. It removes a multitude of tough stains.

I squirt some Dawn dish liquid in the toilet. Then pour in some vinegar. Swish around with a toilet brush to foam it up. Let it sit for about an hour or two. Then swish/scrub with the toilet brush again. Flush. The suds suspend the vinegar above the water line.

You might have hard water which leaves a thin, invisible layer of lime deposit at the water line, which gets stained. I tried variations of the solutions above, but they didn't work on the lime deposits, (and they took hours). Finally, I turned off the water line to the toilet, flushed it twice, the and used a single-edge razor blade to scrape off the lime. If you want, you can use some food-coloring or stainy juice, to see if you got it all, but you may not need to. You can feel when the blade hits the deposit, and when it glides smoothly again. It won't hurt the porcelain which is harder than the razor blade, which has some give to it. (I have used stainless steel scrubbers. which help, but to take off the thick deposits, start with the razor blade and then use the scrubber for the lighter, subtler stains.) Follow that with some Dawn and vinegar solution on one of those sponges that have a plastic mesh scrubber. The whole point is to get the porcelain smooth again. Turn the water back on and flush. You won't have t do this very often, and if you use some Dawn-and-Vinegar when you scrub with the toilet brush, the detergent and acid-vinegar should help keep the lime deposits at bay. If they build up again, do the razor-blade thing again, but I find I only have to do this every couple of years if that.

If you have a dishwasher, you could try leaving a DW pod in the toilet overnight before buying anything else. It always works for me, even on the unglazed spot in my toilet.
