Couple of ideas...naval jelly, wire brush, wire brush wheel on a grinder. And the coup de gras...electrolysis. There are tons of articles on the Internet and even Pinterest for how to do this. The real beauty of electrolysis is that it requires virtually no work other than setting up the bucket contents.

Steel wool then linseed oil. Be sure to use outside and let the cloth you use for the oil dry completely.
