Use Williams Car Cleaner available from Idealworld.TV (UK) Could also be available where ever you are too........
I use a screwdriver and a damp rag
I bought a brush from a $ or surplus store that works really well. It is triangular shaped:

If you can't find one, a tooth or bottle brush works well too to loosen embedded dirt, then vaccuum. Then finish up with another old toothbrush and window cleaner, or wrap a damp cloth around the brush or yard stick.
You can use a small brass brush, it won't scratch the aluminum and of course a damp rag
I just did this! First vacuum the tracks with the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner. I use vinegar, newspaper and a squeegee for the window. Use a large car wash sponge to wet window down with water. Spray window with vinegar. Squeege (i do side to side), cleaning up the side drips with newspaper. For the track, I use an old tooth brush and q tips. Spray with vinegar, scrub with toothbrush, wipe tracks with newspaper or wadded up paper towels or microfiber towel. Use q tips to get in nooks and crannies. If "rough" to move move doors, give it an itsy bitsy squirt of WD 40.
Tracks: crevice attachement on vacuum cleaner. You may have to spray the track with your favorite cleaner and let sit for a few minutes. Then, use table knife blade -- wrapped in a rag.
I know this is an OLD question but someone may find additional info helpful.
We have rental property with 30 year old sliding doors and horizontaly sliding windows. I used candle wax all all of them and they all move easily and smoothly.
