How To Organize Fabric in a File Cabinet
I use a steamer trunk for batting and liners. I use a cedar chest for most fabric. I occasionally sort by color and reorganize . In my extra large sewing table, desk, I have a large drawer that can hold quite a bit of fabric. I had my husband secure leg board on the wall behind my sewing table. This holds scissors, thread, rulers, plexiglass templates and a bunch of other necessities. Hope this helps.
If you can, get a large shoe bag and roll it. You may have to put it inside a closet door to keep them out. Also plastic drawer units are epic for this. You can see through them and get out only what you need.
This will help, too.

Debbie, I get clip hangers for free from clothing stores and use them to hang my material....pieces as large as 3-4 yards. I can see, at a glance, what I have...yardage and scraps as well. I make walkers bags for senior facilities and nursing homes and get a lot of donated material from folks I know and this helps me keep track of what I have available.
use cardboard and put materials on the cardboard like it is displayed in fabric store. Set it upright and place on bookshelf. If you don't like that open place a door with hinge on it.
Here are some other fabric storage ideas:

Hi Debbie: I have a similar problem, only mine is too much fabric! What I did was go to estate sales, (check estatesales.net and you can find estate sales in your area and the site shows what they have) and you can get reasonably priced dressers and even clear plastic bins. What I do is fold my material in half and then in half again and stack it in my clear plastic bins on their edges. That way I can see all of the material and pick out the one I want easily, without digging through everything. Same with putting them in the dressers, store them on their edges. Actually, I fold my t-shirts, sox and undies in thirds and stack them on edge in my dresser so I can see exactly what I want to wear. It's neat and looks great :) If you can make some cat beds with a little catnip in them, maybe your cats will choose them, instead of your material, to sleep on. Yeah, right! :) HAHAHAHA
