Also check Craig's list and Neiborhoods, they post free dog houses a lot.
Friend o mine takes old chairs, cuts off the back, shortens the legs, and attached waterproof tarps or shower curtains over the top to create little tents. Could also use the backs to create small A-frames tents too.
You could easily make something like a lean to out of plywood with a cat sized door opening. Put an old rug or a cheap one from salvation army or goodwill on the floor. Once they get used to going in and out of it, you could even put a piece of blanket over the opening and staple it on for a little more protection in the cold weather. If you feed the feral cats, put the food in the houses, cats normally don't eliminate where they eat and it may help keep it cleaner and smelling better in the long run. If you have a lot of feral cats, you can make it longer, but maybe with walls for smaller houses within, perhaps even putting shelves in for a second layer of cats. I hope this gives you some ideas of how you want your cat houses, Anne. You are doing a good thing with providing them shelter.
Anne,
Consider involving your local cat shelter if you have one. They probably have a trap-neuter/spay-release program. They may also keep some for adoption. You need to control the population in order for them to stay healthy.
Thanks so much for all the great ideas! Six of the 8 I had TNRed. Those last 2 are proving to be a bit more wiley.
