  • First, is your cat spayed or neutered? If not, it is trying to get out to mate. Or it could be trying to catch bugs on the outside. If that is the case, it just needs to be distracted.

Get a scratching post. Easy too make, wrap jute around a piece of a tree branch cut to about a foot and nail it into a board large enough that the cat can't tip over. Place it near the most damaged screen . Show it to your cat, maybe put some catnip on it for the first time and let your cat have at it. Once it starts playing with the post start slowly start moving the post away from the window. Make sure that the window doesn't have any distractions coming from it, like birds flying close of a ray of Sun shining to entice.

Yes I agree! Also you could use a squirt gun. Cat's general don't like water. But the key thing with that is cats are smart and if they see where the water is coming from which would be you, it won't work! It needs to be a surprise! Also you may want to trim their claws! We have a kitten but I wish we still had our 20 yr old. RIP Slinky!

We replaced our mesh fiberglass screens with aluminum screening (you can also get "pet resistant" screening) from the local hardware store.

Replacing screening is easy-ish (you do need to work slowly and carefully so you don't make holes in it) and the tougher material stands up even to our dogs!

You could train your cat with a child's water gun. Each time your cat scratches, then "immediately" squirt him/her and say "no" in a stern voice. If you wait a few minutes, the cats will never understand why you are doing this and may become afraid. You must be consistent. Keep squirt gun in a small bowl (they sometimes leak) and a couple of folded paper towels tucked under bowl. I have to ask, do you provide them with a scratching post? Further, I trained my two cats from scratching on furniture and rugs with this method.
