Hello, I used yarn different colors and made them into a ball and when the ball was made I still had to cut off the end of the yarn, so what I did is I went to the door knob and rapped it round it and measured just how high I wanted it to hang down. Then I cut it and tied on the knob and the cat is happy. You also can hang them off anything you like. Have a good day and hope this was helpful to you.
One of the toys my cats enjoyed the most was a little fuzzy bird that was attached to an elastic cord and hung from the center of a door way... the more it jumped and swung the more they liked it.
Cats like anything that has a movement aspect to it .... pompoms with long strings, longish braids with long ends... needs to be small enough to carry around.... and a material that will hold scent like catnip.

Have you tried needle felting. requires wool yarn, a felting needle and a piece of foam to work on . You can make all kinds of shapes and if you wash them they are cat indestructible -- won't unravel. Google it -- I'm just learning but cat toys are my 1st project. No talent necessary
I took the end tip of a fly fishing rod, anchored the base under a centerpiece on the dining table, tied a string holding a "pad" about a foot off the floor, then spray it occasionally with cat nip. Our two cats spend hours batting the "pad". It can be ANYTHING, that you can tie on the string and spray. So much fun watching them bat it.
