Use a stick preferably one from a pine and use strong wire ( like galvanized wire) to wrap from a sturdy branch upward. Then attach your ornament.
Can you attach it to the side of the branches with floral wire?
Maybe you can make use of a piece of dowel having the same paint as of your tree then just wire or zip tie to the it main trunk.
Hi Susan, you can use twist ties and bamboo skewers to make that topper sit straight, use the skewers to support the topper on either side then use the twist ties to hold it in place, more ideas in the link, hope they help you out,

How high is the ceiling?
What about the possibility of hanging the tree topper from the ceiling with clear fishing line, just low enough so that it is suspended sitting over the top vertical branch of the tree, but looks like it is 'on' the tree.
Attach a dowel rod painted green to your tree below the top using green pipe cleaners to attach it. Make sure it is fine enough that your tree topper will fit over the end of the dowel.
Agree with dowel suggestion. They come in all diameters and can be zip tied to the trunk securely.
