How can I add decorating/drapes behind my bed that has shutters?

You can affix the rod either above or to the side of the shutters. My parents have shutters on all their windows. In the bedroom, she has the rod hung above and slightly wider than the shutters and molding around the windows.
If you want to open and close, use a traverse rod. Place a little wider than your trim.
