Over time, some lampshades, both plastic and fabric, tend to become discoloured and yellowy. Keep in mind that painting any lampshade will block some of the light shining through, due to the increased opaqueness of the shade.

If you are wanting to 'brighten' the lamp, I would suggest to first change the bulb to an LED one of natural or daylight strength.

There are a good selection of paints you can use on a lampshade, firstly, it is important to start with a clean shade.Tape off the areas where you do not want to have paint.

You can use a paint brush or a roller.

Acrylics are a good choice, along with fabric paints. If you choose a chalk paint, that will give it an antique look. You can also spray paint using light layers so you don't get drips and runs. Some have even used watercolors for a more pastel effect.

A couple of other options are dying and staining. For the dye, you'll need a container to immerse the shade in, do a test run with white paper towels to be sure you have the right color at the end. Add either more dye or water to adjust the color.Rinse well with cold water until it runs clear or not and have an ombre effect, let dry.

Stains are usually coffee or tea.

  • If the shade is fabric, I would recommend fabric paint. Keep in mind, the paint will block more of the light.

Hi Kate, you can spray paint the inside of the lamp shade is a metallic paint to add a unique touch. I prefer spray paint for the outside as well, just mask off the edge and use a plastic bag to cover the interior while painting the outside.

Hello. What type of lamp shade is it —-fabric or paper? Some more information might be helpful. I have spray painted both paper and fabric sheets with good results I feel like the paper she looks better than the fabric one however

Additionally as a personal preference I have liked painting the inside of the shade either white or gold for a room brightening appearance.

I tried that and used spray paint. You need to be extremely careful that you get the shade painted evenly, because when you put the light on you will see streaks. A better idea is to find a fabric you like and recover.

Dull or change the color? Also any spray paint will do but if it is a plastic shade use spray paint made for plastic. Bear in mind you will be blocking light by painting it. You can also use chalk paint with long top to bottom brush strokes. Also will block light though.
