Well, what kind of crabs are they? It makes a difference. If they are just blue crabs, then take the top big shell and let them dry out, that way they will give the image of a crab, and you can use them in your garden or terrarium. In the garden, they will deter the pests like squirrels from digging up your plants. Let your grandson how they are helping you.
If a Horseshoe crab, I would return it to the ocean...or https://www.ehow.com/how_7817563_preserve-dead-horseshoe-crab.html
I save clam and oyster shells from restaurants and beaches to help in the garden.
First, you need to get the crab out of the shell. Here's a link:

Get a strong glue like Aleene's Liquid Fusion and glue the parts together. Then spray it with a clear sealer. If its kept in a terrarium where no one is handling it often, then that should be enough.
get the dead crabs out of the shells, clean them up then you are set to go

We live at the beach and collect them all the time. Honestly, if we find them and they're not already dried out at the shore when we find them, we leave them outside in the sun for a few days and Mother Nature takes care of that. Then we simply rinse them very carefully and bring them inside. If you want to keep them shiny and new looking (or easier to dust) you can put a coat of Modge Podge over them. Honestly, the less you handle them the better. They crumble easily once dry. If it's a Horseshoe crab, the same goes...good luck!!
The only way you'd truly be able to preserve the crab itself and the shelf is to put it in a jar with some solution... so, I would do what the others suggested and remove the crab and just display the shell.
