I'm trying to make a cover my dog's bed.

My sewing skills include sewing on buttons or hemming sweat pants but other than I'm not what you'd call a seamstress. My dog is mid-size with lots of fur so the hairs build up after a while. I'm thinking if I had a removable cover I could throw in the wash it would help with that and the musty smells (unless someone has other ideas on how to clean a dog bed?)…and yes that's our other fur baby, our cat, sprawled out across the dog's bed. Lol!

I can't sew either. Do a search for "dog bed covers" and a bunch of pet gear merchants are listed. Just measure your dog's bed (if the cat will let you), and see if someone has a cover that size.

I purchased a bed for my cat from LL Bean years ago, and it had a removable denim cover that just zipped off. Pricey, but it lasted many years

Depending on the size of the bed. You could start with a pillow case. Put it on inside out to fit it. Hopefully you have a sewing machine or know someone who has. After measuring it all along with a end to put velcro on so that it can be put in the washer and dryer. I did this for beds for my two dogs. I went to Goodwill and got two for each and did the bove it works great. Remember not to make it to tite when measuring. Best of luck.

Use a large, washable pillow sham. Or even a crib sheet. Use those elastic sheet corner holders, hook one to one corner of the sheet and the other end to the diagonal corner. Repeat with other two corners. Will stay in place, and is washable.

I cover cushions for my pets with drop cloth. I also use it on "human furniture" like my ottoman to protect the upholstery. You can use velcro, safety pins or simply baste stitches or tie them in place. The cover is easy to remove and wash (unbelievable how much hair they shed). My cats love that they can dig their claws into it (and it holds up), and when my daughters have their dogs here, they find it comfy. I washed it before using it. You just need a piece big enough to wrap around it. The fabric does shrink a bit, so cut it bigger than you need. I buy mine on Amazon.

i used hot glue. When I need to wash it, I pull it apart, wash and reglue

  • Velcro and fabric glue are your friend if you can't sew. I would buy cheap cotton towels and do it envelope style, using velcro to keep it closed. All my pet beds (9 of them) have washable covers and once a month I wash the beds too.

For a no-sew pretty permanent bond, I use Fabri-Tac fabric glue. I've tried Aileen's glues and had the same results. I've used Fabri-Tac for several years with good results even after multiple washings. I found it at JoAnn's, but I bet you could find it online and at other fabric stores.

I agree with Naomie, Velcro is a good idea. There are fabric glues that are washable also. I would use the washable fabric glue for all but one side and use Velcro for the side that you plan on using to take out the bed from. You don't need to make a huge opening. If you roll up the bed, you can make an opening just a little bigger, slip in the rolled up bed and then straighten it out inside the cover. You can find all kinds of towels and blankets at places like Salvation Army to choose from and can even make more than one so that you have one to put on while the other is being laundered. When you take the cover off, make sure to use Febreeze or some kind of spray to freshen the dog bed.

Another idea would be to use a large beach towel in a print/color you like. If it's big enough, you might be able to just fold it around the dog bed nicely and use safety pins (or cute colored diaper pins) and pin it on the bottom.

I make my own. I found material with 🐾 and used Velcro to close the open end. So easy to take off and wash

Go to thrift store & get twin sheets & blankets. Put pillow in middle & fold over sides & use biggest safety pins to pin on & fold over other sides & do the same then do the same for blanket. Sheet only dog can tear with toe nails. Or you can do the pillow in center so corner ends meet in middle & less pins. Good luck.
