  • What do you want to do? Is there enough clearance on the left for a bench or console table and mirror? Make a tasteful mini mudroom / foyer type entrance?

I can think of three options; 1) remove the door and block the pocket with molding, 2) try to make the door blend in, or 3) celebrate it by making it stand out in a creative way (print photos and adhere them using modpodge; use paint or a stick on mural to make it look like a window; paint a "stained glass" door). If you are trying to keep the door in place, I would paint the door and trim the same color as the wall to make it blend a little better. If you have any more of that border, apply that as well. Flatter paint is better because it makes bumps and other texture issues less visible, but be sure to make it the same sheen as the wall regardless of what sheen you use.

I would remove the door to open it up a bit. As Naomie said, you could put a small bench on the left if you have room. You could use planted pots next to it - real or faux. I'd also remove the wallpaper but if you want a similar, but updated look, you could put beadboard on the bottom with some trim. It would look something like this: https://www.elitetrimworks.com/images/product/P/pvc_beadboard_52_inches_tall.jpg

Another popular type of wall board is board & batten. Which looks something like this: http://decorchick.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_5841.jpg

    Wishing you the best!

Well, to be honest, I thought of that too but you said the kitchen was on the other side of the door, so I thought that there might be cabinets and/or appliances there. That would mean a full remodel of your kitchen too and that's not anywhere in what you wrote. :)

your kitchen is by the front door....that’s so messed up. Check and see if any of the walls are load bearing. My first thought is to do an open concept kitchen / living area.

leave a pony wall in place to hide the sink and dishes.

Unless your going to go thru the expense of removing the wall, why remove it if it's a pocket door? Just keep it open. Paint it the same color as the wall.

looks Like a great place for a barn door. Purchase online the hardware. Very inexpensive. You could remove your

pocket door and paint it to use as the barn door or even add to the door to give it a more rustic look if you prefer that. Remember a barn door is referring to the above the door railing and doesn’t have to be really rustic looking. Google different images to find your style. It’s all about the overhead track.
