Hi Judy, The best way to start getting any closet organized is to label some boxes, Keep, Donate, and Trash. Then pull everything out of the closet and sort. If it's a clothes closet you can get hangers that are all alike and start hanging the clothes in sections such as all slacks in one area, all short-sleeved shirts/tops in one area, etc. Soon you'll get the feel of how you want the area to be and will get inspired to get more and more organized. I'd start on a small closet first. You may realize you need some organizing baskets, etc.
This is a wonderful opportunity to treat yourself for 2019! Yes, I said that. Approach this project with positive thoughts! Empty it. Take every thing out. Clean and paint it semi gloss bright white from ceiling to walls to woodwork. On paper design how you would like to store and hang your clothing. Install an additional pole on one side (one higher / one lower) for folded items. If you have room, install a smaller pole on the furthest wall from left to right for your dresses, skirts, etc. On the opposite wall you might want to install shelving for folded items and a shoe organizer. When done, purge your clothing items and only keep what your wear and need. Donate and/or discard the remain items. Hang a sachet of your favorite scent. Now enjoy your 'NEW' closet. (IF you have a walk in closet and have room, bring in a small dresser for additional organization. Remember, bright lighting, a mirror and no carpeting will keep the area spacious.) Best of luck.
Take everything out of the closet and after sorting through your items to keep, think about how you use your closet and design it around that. If you have lots of shoes, plan for great shoe storage to maximize the space. If it's mostly hanging, plan for shorter and longer items. One simple tip to instantly make your closet look organized is to use matching hangars -- your closet will look tidy and pulled together super quick.
