Hall tree or wall hook?
Are you talking directly on the back of your door or an area off to the side. I had always thought that hanging 4 or 5 hooks on my back door and putting
a little sign that says "Hang'em here". Just a thought

The answer would depend upon the area available. A hall tree is always nice. Another option is to mount coat hooks or pegs on a board that you hang on the wall. The board should be longer than 16" so it can screwed into two wall studs if possible. Heavy-duty sheetrock wall anchors can be used if you can't locate studs.
We put a coat hanging area behind our front door with a bench to take off boots/shoes etc. Here is a photo of what we built and hanged behind the door. We moved into a very small home for retirement soon and this was the only area available. It also has a bin for hats/gloves/scarves
