Hi there! I hear you - I would love to have a wood floor, too - but it's super expensive. As far as painting tile, there are definitely concerns about it being permanent, but you can paint it and do touch-ups once in a while and it may still be worthwhile! I painted a 1970's tile backsplash and then sealed it to try an prevent scratches. It worked really well. If it were me I would research floor sealers. If it is high traffic you will want a good one.
Not sure about painting tile floors, but I have painted over wood, cement and vinyl with great success. Have you checked with your local Habitat for laminate flooring? If your area isn't too big, they may have enough for you to install the wood floor you really want, for much less. Good luck.
