Has anyone ever dyed their carpet instead of replacing it?

Does it stay in carpet, or will it get on wet feet once it is dry. Is it harmful to pets?

I have dyed my carpets. I used fabric dye.I sprayed the dye on a small area,then used a brush to get it in the fibers. It had to be very dry before walking on it.A fan helped.Also an electric brush , like the floor scrubber kind worked great.When my scrubber bit the dust,I used a stiff bristle scrub brush that can be put on a broom stick.(better than being on the floor on hands and knees).
After about two years the dye faded. I used a darker color than the original color.Like a darker shade of grey.I used back. It takes time, but saved a lot of money. Good luck!
