where is the floor
Have you considered painting the grout line?
Where is this floor? If in the main living area, you can change the look with large area rugs, leaving a defined access pathway.
Keep in mind that the patterns and colors that were "out of style" are now coming back.
Play into what you have rather than fighting against it.
You can stencil the tiles, a few in the middle, around the edges or all over.
I think the stenciling idea is super smart! It would make the space so welcoming. Michaels has a ton of stencil ideas... just take in one of the tiles (it you have them or even a 6" x6" template -- or the size of your tile.) Pick out a stencil, color, and foam roller. Then: HAVE FUN!
I am not sure painted tile would be the best fix in an entry way because I have read it is not long lasting.
But, you could live with this and play into the rest of the area by using this as nothing more than a neutral base from which to add some interesting--things to draw the eye away from the tile.
6' wide gives you room for some beautiful small pieces of furniture; or a few old windows painted bright colors; a grouping of pictures.
If you want a blast of color, go big and double side tape an abstract rug in bold colors...they won't notice the tiles!! (Nothing boring that you would find in Grandmther's entry!)
There are some inexpensive stunning bold rugs out there!!!
