It sounds like you need the carpet stretched. Older carpet stretches and relaxes in many places. Someone with a carpet stretcher can stretch the rug toward the frayed seam then glue it in place. Even if you have to pay someone, I don't think it would cost much. Be careful that you or anyone else trips on it.
I would find a carpet guy to pull the carpet and reglue the seam with the right glue tape and hot knife tool. If you can find one who will do it on the side, its not expensive at all.
