It would be better to take it off. Spray water from a spray bottle as you go and scrape it off. You’ll be glad to get rid of it
Or you could cover it with planking!

I agree with Michele, removing it is the best way. It’s cheap, no special equipment needed, no strapping involved.
Bulk the furniture in one area and cover with a ground sheet. Use a good scraper and a ladder, then have fun!
if it was installed in the 70's or before, it's likely to contain asbestos. There are kits you can get to test it. Do this FIRST, before you start scraping. If it has asbestos, it should be removed by experts, it's a real health hazard. Or, you can cover it with drywall, or ceiling tiles.
The spray can repair product that is available at big box stores gives a poor result. Even patches done by professionals still show. Wet and scrape, paint or refinish as desired. If you really only asn't to patch by yourself, you can try the spray, just buy 2 so you can use one to practice, it's definitely not a one shot and done repair. Personally, I've done both. Remove it all and you'll be better off in the long run.
I used this product to repair a small area Zinsser 1 qt. Ready-Mixed Popcorn Ceiling Patch
