You can leave them in the winter
depends on where you live. in area 7 (VA) we mulch these well and they do come back. we were also told that we had to dig them up and replant them in the spring. both ways work for us. best of luck in your trials...
If you live in an area that gets below freezing, you have to dig them up. If you don't they will be mush in the Spring.

Absolutely have to dig them up---I'm a Maine girl. I also bring in all my tuberous begonias that I start every early spring in the guest room/hot house. "So sorry, you can't stay for two weeks, I have other guests!"
