Can you help me troubleshoot why my hydrangea wont bloom?

Hi I have about 10 hydrangeas, many different species. Oak leaf, lacecap, etc...this year I barely got any blooms on most of my plants with the oak leaf being the exception..I think i might know why but am not sure...for the last few years I haven't cut back any of them with the exception of the oak leaf ... the reason being because I don't know which ones I'm supposed to. I know some of them should be cut way back and others aren't supposed to be cut at all. Do you think this is why they aren't flowering and if so how do I know what to cut or not ?? All suggestions are appreciated..Thanks

Hi Kim, you're right. Some bloom off of old wood and some new, and frankly, it can be hard to tell. My best practice is to prune and see. If you prune and they don't bloom, then refrain from pruning that particular bush, but since yours aren't blooming, I'd prune them this year to see if that helps. https://thekitchengarten.com/why-and-how-to-prune-hydrangeas/

Prune them this Fall and you will find out next year. I did that last Fall and was rewarded with tons of blooms this year!
If you were getting blooms in previous years without cutting them back then they probably need fertilizer. Use a fertilize for acid loving plants, like Holly Tone in the spring and fall.
