cut it back as far as possible and drill holes in the base.Pour white vinegar, stump out ,or salt in to the base.
They'll come up from the roots. Like weeds! Use an herbicide if you want to exterminate it.
Pour boiling water on it. Worked for me.
If you are only trying to remove it because it is broken but you actually like it let it be. They are notoriously hard to kill.
