They do need some sun. I have them planted on the east side of my house where they get sun until about 3:00 in the summer. They do well there.

oriental lillies are not day llilies-
Oriental lilies have roundish bulbs. Day lilies have a rhizome which is long and cylindrical. Both require sun, but daylilies will tolerate some shade. Day lilies can take over, so be careful where you plant them.
