Well I was told by a rose guy here in MI not to cover roses. Which I have always done. He said can kill them and/or cause disease.

I would start by cutting out all the dead and damaged , then the ones that cross.- next - cut down old stems by half to an outside bud. followed by younger stems in the same manner to give a good shape. Then leave to early spring when they start to grow again ...........

For now prune only the dead branches.In the late winter or early spring start pruning a little at a time so they do not go into shock
