What is the best way to move/transfer a Hydrangea plant?

I have 3 very large Hydrangea plants that I need to move, when and how should I proceed?

Fall is an excellent time. Dig the hole in the new location and toss in compost so the plant is out of the ground for as short a time as possible.

It depends on your climate on when to transplant it. I live in the Northwest and have transplanted mine right after Fall and they did fine. (Before the ground was frozen solid). Make sure to dig the new hole first so you can transplant it right away. If you live in the South, you can transplant them as late as February.
Before you dig it out, you may want to prune it back to make it easier to move.
Here's how I did it:
I took a sharp shovel and dug a circle around the root ball. Then I used the shovel under the rootball and gently wiggled it free. If you have a very large plant, you might be digging for a little bit and it may be a two person job. :)
Transplant your hydrangea right away in it's new home. Sprinkle some compost in the new hole and water water water!
