Wintering over Lilacs in a bucket.
So we are not going to get the area ready for the 2 lilac bushes I purchased. I have them each in a 5 gallon bucket, should I put the buckets in my heated (35 to 40 degree) garage or just out in the back shed? Live in zone 4.

You can do either. Water on occasion but do not over water. I have windows in both shed and garage so my plants get a small amount of light. Depending on your zone, chose the garage if your shed gets REALLY cold. You can also plant them in the bucket in the ground until spring burying the bucket and adding mulch on top.
Keep them cool enought so they stay dormant
overwinter, very light watering and limited sun.
I would put them in the garage. They can freeze in the buckets if left over winter.
They should be fine in your garage. Another option is to bury the container in the ground with straw and/or leaves to protect the roots.

I overwinter my brugmancia in the garage I am in zone 7.
I would keep them in the garage where it's guaranteed to be above freezing.
Agree with keeping them cool and lightly water
