Should I trim hedges so they regrow differently next spring?

I want to make my headges grow leaves and coverage closer to the ground, not sure if I should trim and they will automatically grow closer to the ground or do I have to train them over time to do that. I have too much roots showing and it's not giving the privacy I want.
