I cut mine down to the ground in late winter
I've always been told that they can be cut down in either the fall or the spring but everyone has encouraged me to do it in the fall. Some people do it every year, I cut mine down every other year in the fall and it comes back beautiful.
Very little. Snip off the dead mop heads and remove dead stems. Don't remove old growth that is still alive as many hydrangeas flowers grow on the old wood.
Clean up the whole shape of the plant, also remove the dead flower, prune the hydrangea to grow new buds and encourage more new growth,
In theFall cut off spent flowers and any damaged areas - you are good to go
