They need to be root pruned. In the fall, take a shovel and push it straight into the ground around the outside edge of the full bush. Do not cut the bush back. In the spring, feed the bush with an acid food.Helpful Reply -

I discovered the hard way that you can't cut hydrangeas back to ground level. The following year in the Fall I cut off only about a third of the new growth and had a lot of blooms the following summer.Helpful Reply -

--May need phosphorus in your soil. Test it.--Only prune in spring when you can see that what you're cutting is absolutely dead.--Protect in winter!! Your plant may be a hydrangea that ONLY blooms on old growth or "old wood" & not on new growth/wood. Sooo, if you cut it back every year, you'll never get blooms.Helpful Reply -

I don't cut back, only dead blooms and once a year I put some lime in the soil my plants love this. These are very hardy plants, you show them some love and they will do just fine.Good luck!Helpful Reply -
