45 gallon of potting mix - that's what it will take for my largest container to get filled. It's to be my herb garden. when I go to empty my grow sacks that held the tomatoes and other veg. .what's the opinion on reusing the mix left in the grow bags for the herbs? If possible, would love information on how to reuse potting soil?

  • It would need to be mixed in with new potting soil or mix, chances are there are not many nutrients in the soil left for the herbs to grow. Herbs do not take much, but they do need some.

I'll always take used soil from containers and reuse it. I'll mix it with new for containers or just throw it into the garden beds and trowel it in. If concerned, you can always throw in a handful of fertilizer/plant food.

I cover my pot with large garbage bags in the fall and open them up around planting time. I take at least 1/2 of old soil out and mix in some new. I throw the extra in my garden nd mix it in.

So, how deep do the roots of your deepest growing herb reach? I would think that, based upon the diameter and depth of your "largest container", that you would realistically need only about six inches of potting mix. Don't forget the gravel, sand , and other drainage items.

Perhaps this season, you should experiment with how little potting mix you really need when growing your herbs, or any plant. As far as re-use, I vary my planting between mixing the used soil/ potting mix into a ground planting garden area, and other pots while adding additional nutirents to reboost its potential.

If you want to cut down on the amount of soil used in your container think about using other sources of fill to take up space. Packing peanuts left in their bag will take up space in the bottom. You can google for other alternative ideas. You can amend your old soil by mixing in crushed up dried leaves from the fall and adding fertilizer and peat. This is another thing you can google or visit your local garden center and they can help out. Good luck :)
