If it is your first veggie garden I would recommend using pre started plants and not attempting to grow your own from seed. -

Hi Janet, I would suggest you try not to plant too much! Especially when I first started I had to really hold myself back because just a few plants didn't seem like near enough for a garden. But they get bigger, best advice I can give is start off small! -

A raised bed made with landscaping timbers might be a good idea if you want a small garden. Easy to maintain, yet you can make it as large as you want. Be sure to use a good top soil, mixed with a good fertilizer if you choose to do this. -

I have had no problems with starting seeds in the garden. Spring onions (green onions) are very easy to grow from seeds. Some are more difficult. I agree sometimes it is easier to buy already started plants. There is a lot of satisfaction starting plants from seeds to the end product. I'm not sure of the area you are in so its difficult on what type to suggest. Also it depends on the type of soil you have. Heavy clay soil will benefit from working in some sand to help it drain better. Where sandy soil can benefit from mulch and manure.
