What is this black debris on my tomato plants?

oticed all of this black debris on my tomato plants (on the leaves, actual tomatoes, all over the ground), and I'm wondering what they are and how I can get rid of them? They don't seem to be moving at all, but if I squish on on the ground, the inside is a greenish color.
Please help!!

I could be off-base here, but it looks like the droppings of the tomato worm. Have you checked thoroughly to see if you have one on your plant. I always saw the 'evidence' before i saw the worm.
If the leaves are MISSING, and there are little black kernels at the base of the plant, you have a tomato hornworm. They're exactly the same color as the plant, so you have to look really carefully. It's going to be about as thick as your finger, and probably gripping the underside of a branch somewhere. Go over your whole plant and find it, and kill it.

does it easily come off? At first glance it looks like catepillar droppings. Are they all the same size? But maybe its a fungus if its all over the ground too.
Hello everyone, it seems as though it's hornworms (or possibly caterpillars), as the black debris does easily come off of the plants if we wipe them off. We've found multiple small green worms on the backside of the leaves, and we're guessing they're still baby worms as we haven't seen any of the big ones that are as wide as a finger. We've attempted to remove all of the debris and pick off any worms we find, but we have 8 tomato plants individually potted next to one another so it's difficult to ensure we've actually picked them all off. We have ordered some Safe Brand insect killer, but any more advice on how to ensure we get ride of them and keep our plants alive would be greatly appreciated!
If it is a hornworm even baby ones that would make droppings this tiny still have a horn in the back. It could be several other kind or worm. You are doing right by picking them off. check daily until you don't see any more.

these are hornworms ... all you need to do is to pick them out
OOoooo those worms are such a pest, pick them off and destroy them, I don't think the birds can see them so they don't bother them. Wipe off the spots and enjoy your garden.
He was making one fine mess but I finally found him.
