To me its about the light, and lack of clutter, and a contemporary to modern decor.

Keep your furnishings simple and on a smaller scale, use minimal window treatments to let in the maximum amount of light, and use mirrors to help expand that light. Use plants, real or artificial, tho help create an airy feeling.

I agree with Sharon. Keep paint light, use pops of color in plants, pillows, frames. Minimal drapery and floor covering. Clean lines in furniture.

Place mirrors (or use mirror like paint) where you can, even on ceilings

I agree with the other two comments but I would also consider mirrors that reflect an open window ...reflecting trees and clouds bringing outside into your home.

I removed wood door casings where there were no doors, had edges sheet rocked & used sheer fabric folding blinds in place of curtains.

Paint the ceiling white or a light color, light colored paint on the walls, very few clutter items, your lighting will also have an effect on the openness. For the windows, use sheer curtains.
