How can I update my brick fireplace?

My fireplace is about 60 years old and I would like to update it.

If it has a mantle, think about re-staining it or painting it. You can either stain it a darker color or strip and stain lighter. Painting it is a matter of color choice. If your walls are light, paint it a darker version of the walls and visa-versa. Change out what you have on the mantle as decor. Change the picture or mirror that hangs over it. Put a glass insert on it. If you already have an insert, paint it with heat resistant paint. You can paint the brick, but remember, once painted it's almost impossible to remove. -
